Paleo-Ecology of the Yedoma Ice Complex on Sobo-Sise Island (EasternLena Delta, Siberian Arctic)

چکیده
Late Pleistocene permafrost of the Yedoma type constitutes a valuable paleo-environmental archive due to presence numerous and well-preserved floral faunal fossils. The study fossil inventory allows for qualitative quantitative reconstructions past ecosystem climate conditions variations over time. Here, we present results combined paleo-proxy studies including pollen, chironomid, diatom mammal analyses from prominent cliff on Sobo-Sise Island in eastern Lena Delta, NE Siberia complement previous ongoing paleo-ecological research western Beringia. Ice Complex (IC) (up 28 m high, 1.7 km long) was continuously sampled at 0.5 resolution. entire sequence covers last about 52 cal kyr BP, but is not continuous as it shows substantial hiatuses 36–29 20–17 BP 15–7 BP. Ecosystems on ice: the microbial ecology of Markham Ice Shelf in the high Arctic.
Microbial communities occur throughout the cryosphere in a diverse range of ice-dominated habitats including snow, sea ice, glaciers, permafrost, and ice clouds. In each of these environments, organisms must be capable of surviving freeze-thaw cycles, persistent low temperatures for growth, extremes of solar radiation, and prolonged dormancy. These constraints may have been especially important...
متن کاملNortheast Siberian ice wedges confirm Arctic winter warming over the past two millennia
15 Arctic climate has experienced major changes over the past millennia that are not fully 16 understood in terms of their controls and seasonality. Stable-data from ice wedges in 17 permafrost provide unique information on past winter climate. Recently, an ice-wedge 18 record from the Lena River Delta suggested for the first time that Siberian winter 19 temperatures increased throughout the Ho...

A continuous 15 m long sequence of Ice Complex permafrost (Yedoma) exposed in a thermo-cirque at the southern coast of Bol’shoy Lyakhovsky Island (New Siberian Archipelago, Dmitry Laptev Strait) was studied to reconstruct past landscape and environmental dynamics. The sequence accumulated during the Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS3) Interstadial between >49 and 29 ka BP in an ice-wedge polygon. The...

15 صفحه اولInfluence of sea ice on Arctic precipitation.
Global climate is influenced by the Arctic hydrologic cycle, which is, in part, regulated by sea ice through its control on evaporation and precipitation. However, the quantitative link between precipitation and sea ice extent is poorly constrained. Here we present observational evidence for the response of precipitation to sea ice reduction and assess the sensitivity of the response. Changes i...
